Handbag care tips
A little bit of wear and tear is, in our opinion, a sign that the bag is loved and enjoyed. It is in our interest that you can wear the bag as long as possible so there are some helpful tips on how to make sure it will last and look as good as new.
Despite our best efforts to keep our lives orderly, sometimes your favorite vegan leather items will get dirty. But don’t worry! We’ve got you covered.
Four steps to clean vegan leather:
1. Immediately remove the mess with wet wipes.
When it comes to most stains like juice or coffee, acting fast can be a lifesaver. Don’t let the mess settle in and cause a stain. The longer it sits, the more difficult it will be to remove. Use a wet cloth or baby wipes and wipe off the spot with a circular motion.
2. Spot clean the problem area with dish soap and water
If the stain has already set in, don’t panic. Dilute some liquid soap or a dish detergent liquid with warm water (3:1 ratio of water to soap) and use a non-abrasive white cloth to spot clean the stain. Use a mild detergent because harsh cleaners can make the fabric stiff or damage pleather. Be gentle and wipe on circular motion. Do not use color clothes to spot clean, as the color might transfer to vegan leather.
Use a Q-tip soaked in diluted soapy water to treat the smallest details.
If the stain is more severe you may need to use a very soft toothbrush to clean the textured vegan leather surface. Just dip the brush in the same soap/water solution and gently scrub. It allows you to clean the smallest details.
After you’ve wiped down and spot-cleaned the problem areas use a Q-tip to clean in and around the hardware.
3. Dry the bag completely with a cloth
After cleaning take another soft clean cloth and wipe all over the vegan leather so that there is no water or moisture left. Keep the bag in a well-vented area that won’t get humid.
4. Special vegan leather care kit
Always spot-test a cleaning method before you use it… preferably somewhere on the inside of the bag that can’t be seen by prying eyes.
If the stains are too severe consider taking your bag to see a professional as soon as possible. The stubborn spots will need professional care.
More care tips:
- Don’t leave your handbag in direct sunlight… it can cause the color to fade and damage the leather.
- Never Store Your Handbag Without a Cover or Inside Support
- Keep your bag stuffed while you’re not using it… to help keep its shape better.
- Use a dust bag. These aren’t just for pretty packaging – they are intended to keep your bags dust-free when they’re not being used. They also prevent press marks and scratches to the exterior material.
- Don’t Store Your Handbag in Plastic or Vinyl. Plastics and vinyl do not breathe and are moisture resistant – it actually traps wetness! What this means is that using plastic to store your bags just may cause mold.
